Abstract

Background: The availability of safe and adequate blood is an essential component of healthcare services. However, the demand for blood often exceeds the supply due to the limited number of voluntary blood donors, which is associated with low levels of public knowledge, motivation, and social awareness regarding blood donation. This community service program aimed to enhance public knowledge, awareness, and social responsibility through health education and a mass blood donation campaign.

Methods: The program was conducted on June 13, 2024, at Mercubaktijaya University in collaboration with the Blood Transfusion Unit (UTD) of Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital, Padang. The target participants included members of the general public and the university academic community who met the eligibility criteria for blood donation. The program consisted of health education, health screening, and a mass blood donation campaign. The program was evaluated based on the number of participants attending the educational session, the number of eligible blood donors, and the number of blood bags successfully collected.

Results: A total of 60 participants attended the blood donation education session. Following the health screening, 90% of participants were eligible to donate blood, resulting in the collection of 54 blood bags. The educational session improved participants' understanding of the benefits of blood donation, donor eligibility requirements, and the importance of regular blood donation as a form of social responsibility. High participant enthusiasm and effective collaboration with the Blood Transfusion Unit were the key factors contributing to the success of the program.
